Locals cool off with a swif in Dal Lake in June

Now, you must be thinking, does temperature affect the selection of places to visit in Srinagar? Well, yes. When the temperature is between 12 and 15°C, this region doesn’t get much rainfall. And that’s the best time to visit Srinagar. In 18 to 28°C, you will see a fresh spell of rain there. At that time, you can explore the Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Sri Pratap Singh Museum, and Mughal gardens.

The warmer season is in June, when the temperature can be 20 to 30°C. But if the temperature is between -2°C and 10°C, you may see frequent snowfall, especially in Sonmarg, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg.

However, during June, the snowfall areas with high altitude become less accessible because of the melting snow. These locations are Sinthan Top, Thajiwas Glacier, and Gulmarg Gondola Phase II.

Road Condition in Srinagar in June

By road conditions in Srinagar, we mean the factors that say whether driving on its particular roads is going to be easy or not. This also says about the quality of Srinagar’s roads, including road markings, potholes, weather, and pavement surface.

June is one of the peak season months to visit Srinagar. During June, the ice starts to melt, making most of the locations accessible. Pahalgam, Sonmarg, and Gulmarg are easily accessible during this month, even though they are snow-based locations. Then the roads in Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, Nishat Bagh, and Shalimar Bagh become dry.

The road conditions of Srinagar can be affected by weather, the invasion of visitors, and maintenance work. As per the Economic Times, the Gurez Bandipora road was closed due to snowfall, and traffic was halted there. Heavy rainfall was also a reason for most of Srinagar’s valleys to remain closed.

Because of landslides, Srinagar often experiences road construction. The Boulevard road and NH44 mostly remain operational at that time. Again, the huge influx of tourists can lead to traffic congestion.

Tips: Always choose wider lanes and parking while traveling to Srinagar. Anytime between April and October will give you pleasant weather in Kashmir. It’s better to go with the Mughal road to Srinagar instead of NH1A through Banihal.

Boulevard Road and NH44 are also fine routes for lakeside views. Try to avoid the Srinagar-Leh highway. It’s prone to landslides. And always choose your hotels and accommodations in the city center. Only then can you find accessible transportation.

What Places Are Less Ideal to Visit in Srinagar in June?

Srinagar is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful tourist attractions. But all the places here are ideal to be visited, especially in June.

Those are:

  1. Hari Parbat Fort: It’s a historical place. There, you just need to walk and walk, but you can’t do any outdoor activity. For outdoor activities, lakes and gardens are the best, and June is the best month for this.
  2. Dachigam National Park: This place can be a good one for nature lovers. But I don’t prefer visiting here in June as it’s not the time for wildlife sightseeing.
  3. Hazratbal Mosque: It’s similar to the Hazratbal Shrine and is a completely spiritual and cultural site. You may consider visiting here along with the nearby lake and garden spots.
  4. Kashmir Government Arts Emporium and Shri Pratap Singh Museum: For a history and shopping experience, this museum is fine. But June in Srinagar welcomes outdoor activities more than indoor activities.

Not Recommended for June-

  1. Char Chinar: It’s located on a small island in Dal Lake, and you have to go there by boat. I don’t think it would be as exciting as the activities in gardens.
  2. Badam Wari: It’s quite similar to the Badamwari park, but not so well-maintained as other Mughal gardens.

7 Things to Do in Srinagar in June

Here are the top 7 things to do that you shouldn’t miss out on when you visit Srinagar.

1. Have a Shikara Ride in Dal Lake

Sikhara Boat in Dal Lake in Srinagar in June

Shikara is mainly a light rowing boat. Having a ride on it will give you a leisurely journey across Dal Lake’s tranquil waters. Trust me, you will fall in love with the picturesque views of houseboats, calm waters, and surrounding mountains.

Dal Lake is at a distance of 14 km from Srinagar’s city center and 3 km from the Srinagar bus station. Whenever you visit here in June, make sure it’s early morning or late afternoon, i.e., 6 am to 8 am or 4 pm to 6 pm. Because in the early morning the crowd is less, and the place gives a soft light for the best photographs.

2. Visit Local Markets

One of my top reasons to visit Srinagar is its local markets. Lal Chowk, Residency Road, Dastagir Sahib Market, Zaina Kadal Street, Polo View, etc., are some of the famous local markets here. You must visit them to explore the craftsmanship, culture, and artistry of Kashmir.

These local markets are not so far from Srinagar’s city center. For example, the Lal Chowk is 2.1 km away, and the Polo View market is 3 km away from the city center.

Whenever you visit these markets, you will have a vibrant experience of Kashmir’s rich culture for sure.

However, do try buying the famous Pashmina shawls, papier mache, Kashmiri carpets, and walnuts from there.

3. Stay at the Houseboat

Staying at a houseboat is a unique kind of accommodation. It’s mostly done in Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. The Dal Lake is at a distance of 14 km, and the Nigeen Lake is at a distance of 6.5 km from the city center.

You must try this activity to get a beautiful scenic view and cultural diversity during your stay. Anytime between April and June is the best time to stay at a houseboat, but mid-June is more preferable. At this time, the lakes show their most vibrant colors.

In your stay, you will surely enjoy the lake views, mountain views, home-cooked cuisine, and Kashmiri decor.

4. Visit the Floating Vegetable Market

A floating market in Srinagar is where suppliers and vendors do their business on the banks of the lake. They mainly do not go on floating shikaras. It means the floating vegetable market in Srinagar is located in Dal Lake.

In Srinagar, vegetables are primarily grown in floating gardens of natural wetlands. Then they are sold on the floating shikaras, which we call the floating vegetable market. It’s a completely unorganized market that will give you a unique experience. At a time, you can explore Srinagar’s local commerce and scenic beauty by visiting this market.

As said before, the Dal Lake is at a distance of 14 km and 60 to 90 minutes away from the Srinagar city center. Mid-June will be the best time to visit floating markets, as it’s the most pleasant weather out there.

5. Experience Hemis Festival

Hemis festival is the birth anniversary of Lord Padmasambhava. It’s celebrated in Hemis, Ladakh, not in Srinagar. And from the Srinagar city center, Hemis Ladakh is located at a distance of 450 km. It takes about 10 to 15 hours to get there.

Anyway, the Hemis festival is celebrated to enhance the spiritual strength of people. Also, it highlights the Tibetan Buddhist tradition following the Ladakhi culture. This festival is held in the Tibetan calendar’s fifth month, which is in June. And it lasts for two days.

In the Hemis festival, you can see the beautiful Cham dance. Then the Hemis monastery and Giant Thangkas are also to be explored in this festival.

6. Have a Boat ride to Char Chinar Island

You can take a boat ride to Char Chinar Island with the help of a Shikara. You need to hire from Dal Lake. Trust me, you will be mesmerized by the serene surroundings of the Dal Lake. The tranquil waters and the vibrant Chinar trees will help you take great photographs.

Surprisingly, Char Chinar Island is just 6 km away from the Srinagar bus station. June is a perfect time to visit there, but try visiting there around sunset. At that time, you will get the best picturesque views.

7. Try Traditional Kashmiri Food

Here are some popular Kashmiri foods that you shouldn’t miss out on when you visit Srinagar.

  • Wazwan: It’s Kashmiri cuisine’s multi-course meal with more than 36 courses. So you will get a variety of flavors from here.
  • Rogan Josh: It’s an Indian curry made with lamb and goat. You will get here an aromatic gravy with meat chunks that represents the culinary artistry of Kashmiri cuisine.
  • Yakhni: Also known as yogurt lamb curry, as lamb is cooked here in the yogurt-based gravy.
  • Kahwa: It’s a warm beverage, called sweet tea, found in the Kashmir Valley.
  • Street Food: This has all the flavors of the world. But don’t miss out on the spicy wraps, crispy fritters, and sweet treats of Srinagar’s street food.

What activity should to avoided in Srinagar in June?

  1. Trekking in high altitudes as they have high UV rays and low oxygen levels.
