Srinagar in May: Weather, Temperature, and Tour Plan
Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is renowned for its beautiful natural landscapes as well as its culture. Although Srinagar is an incomparable beauty all year round, May in Srinagar is even more beautiful as many colorful and vibrant flowers blossom in the many beautiful gardens of Srinagar.
The destination offers visitors a perfect combination of scenic attractions, historical significance, and awesome weather. As the snow of winter gives way to spring, the city comes alive with blooms of every color, verdant landscapes, and temperatures to put a smile on your face.
So, this detailed guide about Srinagar in May will include everything from weather, transportation details, where to stay, travel tips, and some of the top places to visit and things to do, allowing you to plan your trip better and make it one to remember.
Srinagar Weather and Temperature in May
May is the beginning of summer and indicates the peak of spring. The valley sheds its winter coat, and the ice starts melting, offering sunny days, mild temperatures, and blossoming gardens to visitors. Therefore, the weather is perfect for sightseeing and other outdoor activities. So, May is one of the busiest months for tourists in Srinagar.

But what I loved the most about Srinagar in May is its temperate weather. This kind of weather makes it possible for tourists to visit the many sites of Srinagar, without experiencing the harsh cold of winter or the heavy monsoon rains of other times of the year. The scenery is at its spectacular best thanks to blooming flowers, especially in the popular Mughal Gardens.
However, temperatures during the day are pleasant, approximately 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). On the contrary, temperatures will be chilly at around 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F) during the evening. This natural cooling is just perfect for sleeping and adds a refreshing edge to other evening outside activities, like strolls by the nearby lake or garden visits.
Moderate levels of humidity (Between 30% to 50%) in May make it a good time to visit Srinagar. The air is largely good, and fresh mountain breezes tend to blow away pollution. Clear skies make for great views of the neighboring mountain peaks and are a great spot for photographers.
About 183mm (7.2”) of rainfall is received in this month, however, rainfall is generally not heavy and will not greatly affect your travel plans. Morning and evening hazes are not common, hence good visibility throughout the day.
Overall, the May weather in Srinagar is just at that sweet spot where:
- You can walk on light layers
- There is still so much fun in physical activities
- The air feels fresh and clean
- A natural ventilation system operates well.
Road Conditions in Srinagar in May
By May, the road to Srinagar is much better. The roads are in good condition after the winter snow melts and before the monsoon sets in. The major highways linking Srinagar with the other important towns, such as Jammu, Leh, and Gulmarg, are clear and through for vehicular movement.
Normally, roads within Srinagar City and roads connecting popular tourist destinations are open and clear. But there may still be occasional issues on some mountain roads at higher elevations due to landslides or repair work.
It’s a good idea to take a bit of a buffer when travelling, especially if your destination is a popular place. Most major roads are in good shape, especially the Boulevard Road along Dal Lake, Airport Road, City Center connections, and the Tourist spot access routes.
Why is May Considered the Best Month to Visit Srinagar?
May is an ideal time to witness the scenic beauty and culture of Srinagar. To begin with, the weather is great for exploring city attractions.
Therefore, May comes with a lot of reasons why Srinagar in May is considered the best time to visit, such as May is the best month when Nature reveals its beauty at its fullest, weather conditions remain ideal, and outdoor activities become easy to access.
Let’s get into the details for each place below-
- Natural Beauty at its Peak
In May, the gardens in Srinagar bloom into a sea of colors with tulips, roses, and lilies all around. The cherry blossoms paint the landscape a delicate shade of pink, and Dal Lake features sweeping views of the mountains. With snow-capped mountains as a backdrop, it is a nature lover’s paradise. Believe me, you won’t regret it once you get to shower in this heavenly beauty!
- Ideal Weather and Climate
Another reason why I prefer visiting Srinagar in May is its climate. The climate in May is perfect for exploring with nice days and cool nights. When the humidity is low and the breeze is just enough. As I mentioned before, it is ideal for strolling around the lake or seeing the sights around the city without getting sweaty.
- Outdoor Activities
May has lots of outdoor activities to enjoy in its temperate climate. You can glide along Dal Lake with no more company than the odd shikara; visit the renowned Mughal Gardens without the hassle of battling a midsummer throng; browse the markets at your leisure; and snap away in nature under perfect conditions.
The pleasant weather, natural beauty, and cultural events in the summer capital of the state mean that May is prime time to indulge in Srinagar’s charm. Whether strolling in the gardens or taking a boat ride on the Dal Lake, this season of holidays also promises never- a never-to-be-forgotten experience in the lap of the garden and a spectacular view.
How to Reach Srinagar in May?
Reaching Srinagar in May offers different options of transportation to choose from. This month brings you multiple options too, including by Air, by Bus, and by train transportation.
Options are discussed in detail in the following-
By Air
Srinagar can be reached mainly through air travel, which is very easy, particularly for those travelling long distances. Several airlines operate regular daily flights, which are more frequent during the tourist season. It takes around 1.5 hours to reach Srinagar Airport from Delhi by flight. And the transfer from Srinagar Airport to the city center of Batam by taxi takes between 30-45 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Not only Delhi, Srinagar Airport (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport) is also connected to Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata, etc within India. For my official purposes, I got the opportunity to travel from Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi too.
But I typically prefer flights from Delhi to Srinagar as multiple airlines are offering direct flights to Srinagar and shorter travel times.
Tip: It is recommended to pre-book airport taxis, or else the prices may be higher if the bookings are made on the spot, during peak season.
By Bus
For budget travelers or to enjoy the scenic road journey, bus services are operational. Regular Bus service is available from Jammu, which usually takes 8-9 hours. Additionally, bus service is available by both the state (JKSRTC) and private buses.
You can also choose from Deluxe, Semi-deluxe deluxe and ordinary buses according to your preferences. Originating from Jammu Bus Stand, these buses have the TRC (Tourist Reception Center) in Srinagar as their destination. However, the trip provides beautiful Himalayan scenery. So, for solo travel, I always prefer traveling by bus.
By Train
Srinagar itself does not have a train station – although you can use the railway to reach Jammu, and travel from there. The major railway station is Jammu Tawi, which is nearly 290 km from here. It has good connectivity with all the big Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
Moreover, taxis and buses are available from Jammu railway Station to reach Srinagar. Train services between New Delhi and Jammu are an economic option compared to the high rates of airfares.
