So, let’s dive into it and start packing your backpack for a perfect holiday trip.

The Route from Srinagar to Sonamarg: How to Get There and the Best Time to Visit

This ride is most visitors’ favorite part of their Kashmir trip. And I love it the most. Sonamarg is about 80 kilometers from Srinagar and is ideal for a day trip. The drive is largely a straight shot, but there are a few things about the route that can help ensure a pleasant and hassle-free journey.

When is the Best Time to go to Sonamarg?

Sonamarg is open to tourists from late April to early November. Here’s why timing matters:

Spring (April-May)

Wildflowers are blooming, snow is melting, and the valley is a riot of color. The roads and highways open back up after a long winter, but occasional piles of snow and ice dot the landscape.

Summer (June-August)

High season. The weather is wonderful, days are long, and meadows are their lushest green.

Early Fall (September-October)

There will be fewer visitors, cooler temperatures, and the landscape will turn golden. Great for photographers.

Winter (November to March)

Heavy snowfall hinders land travel to Sonamarg as well. Not recommended unless you want a snow adventure , and the roads are known to be open..

However, the ideal time is May to September, when the weather is pleasant and the route is reliable. And no matter when you go, make sure to check on the road conditions, if your visit is near the beginning or end of the park season.

Getting There and Road Conditions

Planning how to travel makes sense.

Here’s what’s available:

By road from Srinagar

The travel distance from Srinagar to Sonamarg is nearly 80 km, which takes about 2-3 hours from Srinagar to Sonamarg. You can also break the journey into two parts. The initial 25 kilometres from Srinagar travel through Nagbal, Ganderbal, and Wayul , covering two-way single traffic roads. This part can be slow, especially at busy times.

Srinagar to Sonamarg

From Wayul Bridge, the road turns into a four-lane highway, making the last 50 km an easy and scenic drive. The full itinerary includes Srinagar, Nagbal, Ganderbal, Wayul, Wayul Bridge, Hari Pora, Kangan, Gund, and Sonamarg. In winter, the road is often closed in snow due to heavy snowfall and avalanches and is only accessible to Gaganear village as of December.

Public transport options

Buses: The state buses run to Srinagar on a daily basis. Here, the bus usually leaves Batmaloo or Parimpora in Srinagar around 8 AM and, after 5-6 hours with numerous stopovers, arrives at Sonamarg. One-way tickets cost between ₹150 and ₹ 240 per person.

Shared Cabs: If you want a more flexible option, shared cabs can be a good way to go. As there is no single shared cab from Srinagar to Sonamarg, you will have to split your journey through:

  • From Srinagar, board a Shared cab to Kangan (Rs. 80-90).
  • Take another shared cab ride from Kangan to Sonamarg (₹80-90)

Both the shared cabs take 3-3.5 hours to cover the entire distance and are charged ₹190 for each.

Private Taxis: If you can afford the comfort and luxury, then there are private taxi partners that give access to Srinagar. Fares vary from ₹2,000 to ₹4,500, depending on the type of vehicle and the season.

The highway, the NH1 (National Highway 1), still follows the blazing Sind River for much of the way. Drive slowly on the curves and keep your camera at the ready. In summer, it’s smooth and well-kept. In spring, when it thaws, there are some small landslides to dodge, so keep your eyes peeled.

Tips for a comfortable trip

  • Carry snacks and water.
  • Bring a light jacket and rain gear because the weather can change fast.
  • Top off your gas in Srinagar as pumps are scarce on the way to Sonamarg.
  • Begin early to beat afternoon rushes or unanticipated obstacles.
  • For those who are car-sick-prone, just a caution: The road is a bit twisty.
